Netfilx’s GODLESS is Divine

Don’t let the title fool you. And, don’t let the fact that everybody and their aunt has a new TV series for you to stream prohibit you from watching the best of the best. Netflix’s Godless is just that.

Godless, an eight-part miniseries, features everything you could want, meaning the most necessary ingredients of historical fiction on the American West.

  • The script explores valid historical themes of import; namely, law and order, vigilante justice, women’s agency and authentic life in the West.
  • The plot is post-post-modern, i.e. there is actually a moral to the story. Several of the characters–while mysterious–are downright virtuous, even heroic.
  • The acting performances are so sublime that it is not hyperbole to call them otherworldly; indeed Michelle Dockery, Jeff Daniels and Jack O’Connell transport you to the Old West as the frontier fades. They play 19th century characters for whom it is impossible not to feel genuine respect, disdain and sympathy, respectively.
  • Like any good Western, the vistas and landscapes presented speak to the majesty of the place.

Watch it. And if you don’t like it feel free to comment/reply below, lamenting your total lack of taste in television…
